About Us
Southampton Motor Speedway was founded in 1991 as a 4/10 mile dirt tri-oval raceway. Over the years, it was home to Friday Night Weekly racing, as well as countless other events and gatherings outside of motorsport activities. In 1996, David Atkinson and family purchased the 61.11 acre facility and moved to pave the entire track to turn it into an asphalt racetrack, which eventually gained NASCAR sanctioning for their weekly Dodge Series for up and coming stock car drivers starting with the 1997 Season. Notable drivers that came up at SMS during this time were Denny Hamlin, Hermie Sadler, Elliot Sadler, and many more.
Midway through the 2004 racing season, the track was forced to close due to low car count and lack of spectators for the weekly events. Since then, there had been a few organizations that had attempted to reopen and use the property for different purposes, all unsuccessfully. In 2023, a group of individuals were able to lease the track and successfully reopen the facility for Drifting, Karting, and allowing private rentals to other organizations. As of 2026, Tool Werkes LLC and managing partner Chris DeBord are overseeing all operations at SMS and are working towards eventually bringing racing back to SMS as soon as possible
